Hearing Services FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HEARING SERVICES AT

Why does my eye doctor have a hearing program?

Our vision and hearing function together inseparably during every minute of the day. These 2 senses together create your 3 dimensional awareness of your environment. Neither works particularly well without the other and unfortunately, both tend to fail over time. Leading eye groups across the U.S. now evaluate and treat vision and hearing problems together.

Wouldn’t my family doctor tell me I have a hearing problem?

Unfortunately, statistics suggest that only about 15% of family doctors address hearing loss. The onset of symptoms is gradual and your family doctor is likely to be concerned about other immediate health issues. As specialists in vision care, we are acutely aware of the importance of evaluating and treating sensory losses that affect everyday living.

Why should I choose this practice instead of some other local hearing aid store?

Simply stated-"vision and hearing go together." We use the finest technology available, first rate clinical staff, and the combination of care for your eyes and ears under the watchful eye of your trusted doctor.

How common is hearing loss?

Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults. More than 55 million Americans suffer from hearing loss that is significant enough to have a debilitating effect on communication and 80% of that group is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population continues to age, the problem is growing. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomers are experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier in life than prior generations.

What are the signs of hearing loss?

  • Difficulty hearing conversation in crowded places
  • Ringing or other noises in your ears
  • Friends and family members commenting that you don’t seem to hear them
  • Others complaining that you watch TV with the volume too high
  • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
  • Feeling that people are mumbling, speaking too fast or speaking unclearly in everyday conversations
  • Difficulty understanding women or young children's voices
  • Trouble knowing where sounds are coming from

What should I expect during a hearing evaluation?

We use state of the art equipment to perform a comprehensive audiogram. The audiogram measures your ability to hear pure tones at various frequencies and to hear and understand speech. In addition, the doctor will obtain a detailed history of your experience (if any) with classic symptoms of hearing loss and any sudden or unusual progression that would indicate the need for evaluation by a specialist in otology. Test results, recommendations and treatment options will be reviewed with you in detail. After the examination you should have a clear understanding of your hearing capabilities and your treatment options

If I have hearing loss, will I need hearing aids?

Every case of hearing loss is different. For approximately 90% of all cases of hearing loss, hearing instruments of some kind are the only treatment option because the problem is not medically or surgically correctable or reversible. In some cases, consultation by a specialist in ENT/Otology is appropriate and your doctor will discuss this with you following your evaluation.

Will I need two hearing aids?

Because you have two ears, you naturally hear in stereo. Most patients are prescribed two hearing aids because most hearing loss occurs symmetrically in both ears. Benefits of wearing hearing aids in both ears include better localization, better hearing in background noise, better hearing for soft sounds, less strain on you while listening and higher success rate/satisfaction with hearing aids.

Why should I wear hearing aids if I can"get by" without them?

Untreated hearing loss is more noticeable than you might think. Clinical studies show that untreated hearing loss dramatically impacts quality of life for you and for those closest to you. Miscommunication is noticeable to others and can lead to negative changes in your personality. Many people with untreated hearing loss gradually withdraw from activities that they enjoy, leading to frustration, isolation and depression.

How do I know which hearing aids are right for me? Are all hearing aids alike?

The experienced audiologist will recommend the most appropriate hearing aid based on your lifestyle needs and hearing loss. Danbury Eye offers a full line of hearing aids with many different features and benefits so we can meet the needs of various types of hearing loss. Only a knowledgeable professional who is experienced in prescribing these devices can help you select the hearing aid that is right for you.

What if my new hearing aids just don’t work for me?

We have a 30 day trial period. If you are dissatisfied with your hearing aid you may return it within the 30 day period and receive a refund, or exchange your hearing aid for a different style/model that better meets your needs.

How much do hearing aids cost?

Quality hearing instruments are available in all price ranges at Danbury Eye Physicians & Surgeons and are competitively priced. We do not use promotional pricing, misleading advertising or sell discontinued models which can make the process of selecting a hearing aid confusing. You can be assured of being prescribed the correct hearing instruments at a competitive price. Our hearing aids range in price from around $1000-$3000 depending on which level of technology is prescribed. We also offer patient financing, including interest free payment plans.

Are hearing aids covered by Medicare?

No, Medicare does not pay for hearing instruments just as they typically do not pay for eyeglasses or contact lenses for most vision problems. Hearing aids are only rarely covered by other insurances.

Can I deduct my hearing aids from my taxes?

Yes! Hearing aids are a medical device and as such are tax deductible. We suggest that you consult your tax advisor to remain current about any new changes to the tax law.

Are most hearing aids unsightly and uncomfortable?

Digital technology is revolutionary today and miniaturization of components has enabled most patients to wear tiny devices that are virtually impossible to see and are hardly noticeable to the wearer. As we have stated before, every case of hearing loss is different, and the most appropriate hearing instruments for any particular patient depend on the extent of the loss, the activity level of the patient, and the performance demands on the instruments themselves.

Can't I just buy hearing aids on the internet?

Beware of unauthorized internet retailers. Successful dispensing is best achieved by licensed hearing professionals that are trained in the proper use of the products. High quality, professional service is achieved face to face. Most major manufacturers do not authorize internet retailers to sell their products for this reason.

What if I go somewhere else for my hearing care or already wear hearing aids?

You may continue to go to your hearing care provider but we just need documentation of your hearing health in our files for your overall care. We now routinely screen for indication of hearing loss in all our patients and a comprehensive hearing evaluation is included as part of the total package of care that we provide at no additional cost.
