In association with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the doctors and staff of Connecticut Eye Consultants (formerly Danbury Eye Physicians & Surgeons and Greater Waterbury Laser Eye Surgeons) want to remind you and your family of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment when it comes to eye-related conditions like cataracts.

June is National Cataract Awareness Month, so we’re encouraging everyone above age 60 to schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam. By doing so, our physicians will be able to check for common eye problems/diseases and help determine a treatment plan if necessary.

Cataracts are a common condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque from normal aging, resulting in blurred or cloudy vision. Currently, more than half of the United States population age 65+ are experiencing measurable vision loss from cataracts. Although the most common age group affected is 65+, most age-related cataracts begin developing in our 40s.

Symptoms are relatively non-existent until protein buildup on the natural lens of the eye is significant enough to interfere with the passage of light through the lens. Common symptoms include -  but are not limited to - the following:

• Cloudy or blurred vision
• Double vision
• Faded colors
• Increased sensitivity to glare

The good news is that by being aware of your eye health and getting regular comprehensive dilated eye exams, you will be able to stay on top of your eye health to determine whether cataracts or refractive errors pose a risk to you.

By scheduling an eye exam with your local ophthalmologist, he/she will be able to detect possible vision issues or eye related diseases.
